Women’s Record Smashed at Ultra-trail Cape Town
On 1 December, the 100km Ultra-Trail Cape Town presented by Salomon (UTCT), was dominated by the international contingent in the mens and the womens races, with the performance of the day being Great Britain’s Beth Pascall’s convincing breaking of the women’s record by over an hour, and placing 9th overall.
A record 68 countries were represented across the 4-race event, with South Africans in firm support of the trail seasons grand finale.

With just 2 weeks to go until Ultra-Trail Cape Town 2019, plenty of eyes are on announcements of international elites lining up to tackle the 100km event. It’s no secret that Courtney Dauwalter is heading this way, and on a good day she could well challenge the men’s field. Courtney hails from the US, and has podium finishes at the likes of UTMB and the MOAB 240 race, where she crossed the line first overall after 2 days, 9 hours and 59 minutes, 10 hours ahead of the second place runner.

The Pundits Said What?
The 100km Ultra-trail Cape Town saw disappointment, and some surprises, with three of the men’s race favourites, Rob Krar, Prodigal Khumalo and Ryan Sandes, being forced to withdraw and surprise names making it to top spot in both the men’s and women’s races.

With last year’s first and second placed men back to claim the top spot for 2018, and a very strong field of international elite athletes travelling to South Africa for 1 December, the Ultra-trail Cape Town (UTCT) Men’s race will be an exciting one. The Women’s race also looks to be closely contested, with Italian Francesca Canepa and Kelly Wolf from the United States (US) currently on the same top points in the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) ranking, which means that UTCT will decide the 2018 World Tour Women’s champion.
