Hosted by Wildrunner, the BOS Sport Mountain Challenge Series, is the only one of its kind in South Africa. A tough, pure mountain running series made up of three separate races; the Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge (JMC), the Helderberg Mountain Challenge (HMC) and the Marloth Mountain Challenge (MMC). Each event consists of a Lite, Extreme and Ultra distance race. To complete the series, participants must compete in the same distance category at each race.
First in this popular series is the Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge, which takes place on Saturday 16 May 2020. Entries open at midday on the 26th of February, and are expected to go fast.
What You Will See
Cape Nature refers to this reserve as one rich with “sprawling mountains and lush fynbos.” Indeed, the Jonkershoek Valley is a mountain scene to rival any across the world. Massive turrets and cliffs of orange-faced quartzite hold fortress over a collection of rambling mountain streams and waterfalls. It is a wilderness running experience that serves up a main dish of brutal climbs and gnarly descents, along with a side dish of unimaginable biodiversity and natural splendour.
What You Will Run
Participants can choose between three distances; 39km, 24km or 12km. Whilst these three distances may seem relatively short at face value, opt for the 24 or 12km if you have any doubts around your mountain running ability. The shorter two are no less scenic, challenging or rewarding. The 39km is for experienced mountain runners.
What You Will Experience
The highs and lows of mountain running are best understood from within. A combination of hiking and mountain biking trails are expertly linked for a diverse and thrilling running journey. Climbs will test your resilience, technical trail will test your patience, and the flowing single track will feel a little like a party with a few hundred of your best friends. The mountain water is fresh and cold, and you’re likely to form a few long standing friendships along the way. The finish line is a hive of raw emotion and celebration. The coveted medal is just one of the many take-outs of the day. If its your first JMC, prepare to have this experience seep deep beneath your skin, and leave indelible marks of mountains, and of magic.
