Whether you enjoy the cooler temperatures or can’t get away from work early enough, night runs are a reality for many people. While you should always be careful while running there are a few things you need to be extra careful about at night. Here are a few rules from Emily Polachek to make it the best run it can be!
1. Be aware.
You’re tired and distracted and all you’re thinking about is getting home but on a night run you need to stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings, those extra few seconds notice in the dark can do the world of difference.
2. Run a familiar route.
Pick a route you’ve done a million times before so you know the trees, corners and building along the way. Try and build up a number of very familiar routes as running the same route every night can also create a pattern that unwanted creepers might pick up on. Switch up your routes but stick to the routes you know.
3. Carry identification on you.
Get an ID bracelet with your name and emergency contact number and maybe your allergies on it. In South Africa it is best not to carry your actual ID or Driver’s license as if they get pinched it’s a hassle to replace them. Carrying identification is important for first responders to identify you and contact your loved ones.
4. Run against traffic.
“Facing traffic as you run not only provides drivers a clear view of what’s ahead of them, but also gives you a visual of oncoming vehicles in case you need to make any last-minute maneuvers.” says Polachek. Try to avoid rush hour traffic and if you are blinded by headlights try wearing a cap or visor advises Emily.
5. Run with a buddy or join a running group.
Safety in numbers, everyone has heard this cliché but not everyone listens. Women especially should avoid running alone in poorly lit areas. Join your local club or run with a friend.
6. Bring a cellphone.
A tricky one in South Africa and sometimes controversial but can save you from a sticky situation. “A phone can prove useful for utilizing special tracking apps and/or simply to call someone when you’re in a pinch. With a push of a button on your phone, the free bSafe app sends an emergency message or calls designated friends who can respond and even locate you on a map” says Emily. If you’re worried about taking your new Iphone 7 with you then perhaps get a little pay as you go entry level smart phone that will be designated for emergencies on the run.
7. Ditch the headphones.
Just do it, or if you have to have music then only use one earpierce so you can hear oncoming traffic.
8. Wear reflective or brightly colored clothing.
It might not be fashionable but it can save your life. Most running stores stock neon colours from shoes to shirts. Polachek also recommends wearing a head torch to light the way and alert vehicles that you’re on the run.
