Help aspirant trail runners by donating your out of size kids trail running gear!
As parents we understand all too well how quickly kids grow. Buy shoes today and six months later they are too small. This collective trail (no pun intended) of out of sized shoes and clothing was the seed from which an idea grew in young trail runner Isla Middleton - daughter of Owen & Tamaryn Middleton of Wildrunner.
The concept was simple enough: 1. Create a way to collect unwanted kids trail running kit and 2. Connect the kit with those kids who really need it. Step one was easy given she is a Wildrunner, but until recently there really was no dedicated outlet to get this kit onto the feet and into the hands of those who really need it.
Well, enter into the ring the 'Southern Trail Goats Youth Crew', spearheaded by Sun Valley teacher and ardent trail runner, Liam Roelofse. The Southern Trail Goats started up earlier this year, and has steadily grown into a wonderful community of likeminded trail running kids and families. It's all about giving kids the opportunity to experience the amazing mountain trails we have right on our doorstep, within the safety and support of a network of trail running adults. There are many kids who just simply have not had the opportunity to experience the thrill of running on trails.
The Southern Trail Goats have a close collaboration with the Siya Mkiva Foundation NPC. The Siya Mkiva Foundation NPC is a registered non-profit organisation in South Africa, that blends sports empowerment and community nourishment under the inspiring motto: “Serving the Nation with reckon quality.” Their unique Sports & Kitchen Soup initiative brings together youth engagement through athletics—like training clinics or informal sports activities—with a nourishing soup kitchen that feeds local children and families. By combining movement and meals, the foundation aims to promote healthy living, hope, and dignity while fostering stronger, more resilient communities.
So if you have any gently used youth trail running shoes, hydration packs, running clothes, headlamps, or other outdoor gear, please consider playing this kit forward. All sizes of youth gear are welcome, and donations will go directly to local kids who are eager to train, race, and adventure—but may not have access to the necessary equipment. Your donation can make a real difference in a young runner’s experience and growth. Whether it’s a pair of trail shoes that no longer fit or a lightweight rain shell collecting dust, your gear can help empower the next generation of trail lovers.
